Evolution of the clay room

Updated: Apr 14

The Evolution of a Room

There was a moment when this room was barely a room at all. The roof had collapsed, the floor had disappeared, and what remained were raw stone walls—open to the sky, to rain, to time itself. It was less a space to enter and more a fragment to observe.

And yet, step by step, it began to change.

Today, a green walking roof rests above it, alive with vegetation and quietly blending the structure back into the landscape. Beneath it, a ceiling made from local canes forms a delicate, natural layer—lightweight, breathable, and rooted in traditional building methods of the region. It softens the transition between structure and living space, adding texture and warmth.

Inside, clay plaster now covers the once-exposed stone, giving the room a calm, breathable skin. A new wooden floor is taking shape, prepared for an underfloor heating system that will bring gentle, even warmth. Light enters through newly installed wooden double-glazed windows and doors, framing the outside world while protecting the inside.

The result is difficult to describe in purely architectural terms. The room feels organic—almost as if you’ve stepped inside a living organism. Nothing is rigid or imposed; everything works together, quietly.

What becomes clear over time is the importance of stepping back. Only with distance can you truly see the transformation—not as a series of tasks, but as an evolution. A space once abandoned has not simply been rebuilt; it has grown into something new while still carrying the memory of what it once was.
